Authentic Leadership

Much is talked today about authentic leadership, but what is it exactly? Authentic leadership is a leadership style that emphasises being true to oneself, genuine, and transparent in interactions with others. It’s a concept that emerged in the field of leadership and management and focuses on leaders who are deeply aware of their purpose, values (moral code), emotions, strengths, and weaknesses, and who lead with a sense of integrity and ethical principles.

Key characteristics of authentic leadership include:

  1. Self-Awareness: Authentic leaders have a clear understanding of their sense of purpose, values, beliefs, strengths, and limitations. They are in tune with their emotions and motivations. Importantly, they are aware of their shadow side and can manage it. They can recognise how to respond to any given situation rather than a thoughtless reaction.
  2. Mindfulness: Authentic leaders are mindful of themselves and their impact on others. They constantly monitor the situation they face and calibrate their thinking between ………………
  3. Transparency: Authentic leaders are open and honest in their communication. They share their thoughts, decisions, and actions openly with their team, fostering a sense of trust and credibility.
  4. Vulnerability: Authentic leaders are unafraid of showing their vulnerability, showing others that they are not perfect, that they make mistakes and are prepared to admit them.
  5. Balanced Processing: They consider multiple perspectives and seek input from others before making decisions. This approach helps them avoid biases and make well-informed choices.
  6. Relational Transparency: Authentic leaders build strong relationships with their team members. They connect on a personal level and are approachable, which fosters trust and collaboration.
  7. Internalised Moral Perspective: Authentic leaders have a strong sense of ethics and a moral compass that guides their decision-making. They prioritise doing what is right over personal gain.
  8. Ethical Behavior: Authentic leaders act according to their values and ethical principles, therefore setting a positive example for their team members. They are strongly oriented towards doing what is right for the good of all concerned.
  9. Positive Psychological Mindset: Authentic leaders exhibit qualities like optimism, enthusiasm, resilience, and faith, which contribute to a positive and supportive work environment.
  10. Visioning a Positive Future: Authentic leaders are about to see a positive future no matter how difficult the current situation may be. Painting a picture of a positive future inspires others to believe in what can be, rather than what is.

Authentic leadership is not about perfection; it acknowledges that leaders are human and have their flaws. It’s about being true to oneself while striving to improve and lead with a sense of purpose and integrity. This leadership style is often associated with positive organisational outcomes, such as increased employee engagement, satisfaction, and overall well-being.

It’s important to note that authentic leadership is just one of many leadership styles, and effective leadership can take various forms depending on the context and the needs of the organization and its members.
